A Comparison of Gold Leaf and Other Occlusive Therapy

Abstract
A series of 44 patients with 64 skin ulcers of varied etiology were treated in a partially controlled study with gold leaf and other occlusive agents. The response rate (percentage reepithelialization per day) of ulcers treated with gold leaf was no better than the response rate of those treated with a simple dressing. Healing time in days was longer in ulcers treated with gold leaf than in those treated with a simple dressing. Several ischemic ulcers resistent to numerous forms of previous therapy healed with topical gold leaf. Several similar ulcers also healed with a simple dressing. Ulcers occluded with aluminum foil or polyethylene film failed to show evidence of reepithelialization. Lesions covered with flexible collodion showed evidence of healing after heavy crust formation.
