Abstract
What can be learned about cancerogenesis from certain rare genetic diseases marked both by instability of chromosomes and an increased cancer risk? What parallels can be drawn between these disorders and other situations also carrying an elevated cancer risk? What is the evidence for the view that a tumor cell population derives from a single cell bearing a stable mutation? These and many other questions are discussed. Keywords
