Abstract
[long dash]In a series of papers published during the past 4 years, Collmann and Stoller have developed the hypothesis that Mongolism, or Down''s Syndrome, is caused by infection of the mother with infectious hepatitis virus at or near the time of conception. It was concluded, on the basis of analysis of vital statistics, that sufficient epidemiologic evidence has been collected to warrant biological investigations on the interaction of viruses and aging ova. Data are presented from the Seattle-King County Health Department, which are inconsistent with the above hypothesis. Collmann and Stoller''s data and their analysis are reviewed, and there is disagreement with many of their conclusions. Further epidemiological study is indicated before related basic biological research is to be contemplated. This publication has 9 references indexed in Scilit:
