Abstract
Acetate was infused into the rumen of fed sheep at a rate of 280 mmoles/h. The utilization of acetate by skeletal muscle increased threefold, glucose utilization remained unchanged and lactate output increased 11-fold. Consequently an increased availability of acetate spares glucose from oxidation in skeletal muscle. Key words: Sheep, glucose, lactate, acetate, skeletal muscle
