Legume establishment on low fertility semi-arid tussock grasslands

Abstract
Establishment of coated seed of ‘Grasslands Huia’ and ‘Grasslands Pitau’ white clover, Grasslands Turoa’ and ‘Grasslands Pawera’ red clover, alsike clover,, and ‘Wairau’ lucerne from drilling and broadcasting was compared over three seasons. Satisfactory establishment was achieved only in one year, which had higher than average rainfall over the first growing season. Production in the second spring from that sowing was about 1 and 2 tonne DM/ha for white and red clovers respectively. Only 0.1–0.7% of the seed sown survived in dry seasons, with little difference between species. Rainfall appears to be the main limiting factor. Pawera red clover performed best and lucerne poorest.
