Abstract
Bioptic telescopic spectacles have enabled people with impaired vision to obtain a license to operate a motor vehicle in some states. The telescopic unit is located in the upper part of the spectacle lens so that the patient is using the spectacle lens for most purposes and lowers his head to look through the telescope for reading signs at a distance. This arrangement does not restrict his peripheral vision, but the central field is constricted to seven degrees and there is a ring scotoma of 12 degrees created by the edge of the telescopic unit.
