Abstract
Based on data collected over a period of 14 years from an average of 16 stations represented each year, and a total of 143 varieties tested, a positive correlation between maturity and yield is reported when conditions are favourable for all maturity classes. In the presence of stem and leaf rust, and under certain climatic conditions, late varieties were less productive. The manner in which these results affect production and breeding is discussed and the yield: maturity index, based on production per day from seeding to maturity, is seen to be an aid in selection. It is recommended that crop hazards should be considered in mapping out areas for regional testing. Keywords
