Abstract
Enhancement ratios of the surviving fraction after U.V.-irradiation and subsequent liquid-holding period were compared with microcalorimetrically-obtained data on the glucose storage in Saccharomyces mutants carrying the genes rs1, rs2, rs3−2 and in the wild-type. The survival rates were found to be proportional to intracellular glycogen reservoirs. For diploid cells the enhancement ratios of survival after recovery in buffer supplemented by glucose were related to the cellular rate of catabolic activity of glucose. The influence of glucose, due to its high free energy, is limited by the repair systems in the strains used. Unirradiated and irradiated resting cells show no differences in microcalorimetric behaviour. This indicates a high U.V.-resistance of the glucose metabolism to doses which reduce survival to less than 1 per cent.
