Swine influenza

Abstract
Deaths have occurred predominantly in young healthy adults,4 in contrast to mortality resulting from infection with most influenza strains which result in increased mortality in those with weak immune systems, including infants and the elderly. This has been observed previously in influenza pandemics and may be attributable to development of a cytokine storm, from which young adults with efficient immune systems may be at increased risk. The reason for the wide variation in mortality between countries is not clear, although this has been observed previously with other influenza A pandemics. The World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have advised that to date, there is too little information for confirmation of this initial observation or to make predictions about the future course of the outbreak.
