Abstract
98% of 279 2-day chick embryos died within 3 days of inoculation with PR8 strain of influenza. All dead embryos showed severe developmental abnormalities characterized by microcephaly, micrencephaly, flattened mid-brain, twists of main axis, impaired growth of the amnion and of the entire embryo. The effect was due to actual infection with and growth of the virus. Mumps virus in 2-day chick embryos caused death after 6 days but produced no characteristic deformities. Keywords
