Abstract
The dipole moments of thianthrene, two thioethers and two mercaptans are measured and compared with values in the literature. The differences in moment of corresponding oxygen and sulfur compounds are attributed to inherent differences in the H–O, C–O, H–S and C–S moments and to the greater polarizability of sulfur as compared to oxygen. In contrast to the oxygen ethers, the thioethers show as much intermolecular action as the mercaptans. Keywords
