Fatal Infection Due toChromobacterium violaceumin Vietnam

Abstract
Two cases of U. S. soldiers in Vietnam who developed fatal infection due to C. violaceum are reported. Hepatic abscesses occurred in one patient and widespread pulmonary abscesses in the second. A case with a draining skin lesion is also mentioned. Fatal infection due to C. violaceum was first reported from Malaya in 1927.6 Nine of the 16 known cases in the world literature have occurred in that country.6 The organism apparently is widely distributed in Vietnam and was isolated from patients in three separate areas and from a main water source in a village in the central highlands. Complete bacteriologic characteristics and antibiotic sensitivites of the four separate isolates are reported. The known occurrence of latent infection with C. violaceum suggests that active infection may occur in servicemen after return from Vietnam to the United States.
