Abstract
Homologous transplants of the rabbit kidney have been carried out by a procedure in which vascular anastomoses of the donor aorta and vena cava were made to the carotid artery and jugular vein of the host. To obtain vessel calibers of approximately the same size, the donor rabbits were selected to weigh 1 kg and the recipient 4 kg. Plastic tubes, inserted into the vessels, prevented collapse of the arteries and veins during suturing. These tubes were removed after completion of the anastomoses. The rejection process in the rabbit kidney is considerably slower than in the dog. Some renal parenchymal cells can sur -vive more than 4 weeks in homologous transplants of the rabbit kidney. It is suggested that the breakdown in the vascular supply to the transplant may be important in the acute rejection process. Keywords
