Simultaneous Estimation of Rates of Thyroxine Degradation and Thyroid Hormone Synthesis1

Abstract
Concomitant estimations were made of the rate of degradation of thyroxine peripherally and the rate of incorporation of I into organic moieties within the thyroid gland. Equivalence of these rates in non-thyrotoxic individuals was shown. Normally, thyroxine distributes in a virtual volume of 10 1, of which approximately 10% is degraded daily. Approximately 50 [mu]g of hormonal I are synthesized and degraded daily. In patients with untreated Graves'' disease the fractional rate of turnover of thyroxine is markedly increased.
