Abstract
The binding energy of a particle in nuclear matter, , is calculated using a -nucleon two-body potential with a hard core, which reproduces the binding energies of light hypernuclei and the -nucleon scattering at intermediate energies. The simplified version of the Brueckner theory used in previous calculations is applied. The effective mass of the particle, , is estimated to be about . The rearrangement energy is included in the calculation. The result obtained, MeV, is in good agreement with the measured value.
