Abstract
Vestibular Depression by a Droperidol-Fentanyl Combination JANSSEN has recently developed several analgesic and hypnotic drugs.1 Two of these have been used in combination to produce an anesthetic state.2-6 They are droperidol and fentanyl citrate (Innovar), with a droperidolfentanyl ratio of 50:1. One cubic centimeter of the mixture contains 0.05 mg fentanyl and 2.5 mg droperidol. Fentanyl is a highly potent analgesic with a rapid onset and short duration of action. It possesses a weak emetic action and produces mild vagal stimulation. Droperidol belongs to an entirely new class of compounds known as butyrophenones. It produces sedation and a state of psychic detachment but leaves the patient able to cooperate intelligently on demand. Its onset is from five to ten minutes and lasts more than six hours. Droperidol possesses potent antiemetic properties and seems to protect against some ventricular arrhythmias. In combination these drugs produce an anesthetic condition that
