Abstract
Two new fungal culture media, dermatophyte test medium (DTM) and Wiegand's ink blue agar, were evaluated in Vietnam for their ability to assist in the diagnosis of dermatophytosis under microbiologically dirty combat conditions. The pH indicators incorporated into the media permitted persons who were not mycologists to distinguish between dermatophytes and other organisms with greater than 97% accuracy based on color change alone. When the two media were inoculated simultaneously from the same lesion, recovery rates for dermatophytes were comparable. The DTM was preferred to ink blue agar because of its greater rapidity of growth and vividness of color change. Keywords
