Abstract
The luminescence resembles the sensitized luminescence from NH3 and ND3, in that it arises from a charge-transfer complex of the substrate molecule with Hg(3P0). The quantum yield of luminescence is 0.19±0.06 for H2O and 0.49±0.15 for D2O. The rate constants for reaction with Hg(3P0) are 2.0 × 10–14 cm3 molecule–1 s–1 for H2O and 1.1 × 10–14 cm3 molecule–1 s–1 for D2O, with an estimated error of ±10 %.Keywords
