Exfoliative Cytopathologic Studies in Organ Transplantation: I. The Cytologic Diagnosis of Cytomegalic Inclusion Disease in the Urine of Renal Allograft Recipients

Abstract
This is the first report of the cytologic diagnosis of cytomegalic inclusion disease in the urine of renal transplant recipients. During 1 year, 215 urine specimens from 22 renal allograft patients were studied cytologically. Urine specimens from four of the 22 patients contained cells which are diagnostic of cytomegalic inclusion disease. Intranuclear inclusions were identified in the lungs of the single patient who has come to autopsy. The remaining three patients are alive, with functioning renal grafts in place.
