Abstract
Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen: —I thank you for this gracious reception and your kindly words of introduction. But I do not feel like a stranger in this great State of Ohio. My great-grandfather, a Revolutionary soldier, settled at Point Harmar, subsequently helped defend the Territory against the Indians, and was a member of the Second Legislative Assembly of this State. My mother was born on the beautiful banks of the lower Muskingum, and my grandmother on my father's side was the daughter of Captain Benjamin Brown, one of the earliest settlers of Athens County, and whose numerous descendants still inhabit the Ohio River Valley. Therefore, in speaking in this famous Capitol, to this distinguished audience, I feel that I have a closer personal interest in this people than my friend Dr. Reed was aware of when he asked me to address you on this occasion. Keywords
