Abstract
The main theme of this paper is a consideration of the question 'what is the most suitable physical environment for human working and living conditions?' The three criteria of damage risk, performance and subjective response are employed in formulating answers to this question and their use is illustrated with reference to the specific effects of environmental heat, light and noise on human activity. The view is expressed that a number of criteria is available to the engineer for designing the environment to a satisfactory standard, although there is a need for continuing research to find better criteria. This is particularly true when considering the total environment, and in the final discussion suggestions are made on areas for future research and development. Keywords
