Abstract
Using a 40 cm curved crystal spectrograph of the transmission type, the existence of the high frequency satellite L beta '1 in the X-ray spectrum of thulium ( lambda =1518.9 XU) has been established. The wavelength of this satellite in the case of some other rare earths has been remeasured. Based on the multiple ionisation theory the satellite has been assigned to the transition LIIMI to MIMIV. The wavelength values calculated on this level scheme show good agreement with the measured wavelength values for L beta '1, lending thereby, further support to the validity of the multiple ionisation theory. Identification of L beta '1 as octupole transition LIIMV in the case of 69Tm, 66Dy 65Tb and 64Gd by earlier workers has been critically examined. Keywords
