Diagnosis of Rubella Virus Infections

Abstract
False results of the rubella hemagglutination inhibition (HAI) test performed on human sera have been detected, using sucrose density gradient centrifugation and indirect immunofluorescence. A linear correlation could be established between the HAI titer of whole serum and that of the IgG sedimented in sucrose gradient. Indirect immunofluorescence, sucrose density gradient centrifugation and HAI test were in agreement. Sera that gave inconclusive results by the HAI test were tested by the two other methods. Sucrose gradient centrifugation and indirect immunofluorescence allowed us to reach conclusive results and were found to be of equally valuable assistance in clarifying doubtful HAI results.
