Abstract
A formulation based on the use of the dielectric function is developed in the present paper and allows one to determine in a self-consistent way the transport properties for a multicarrier system characterized by any scattering mechanism. Starting from semiclassical arguments and within the approximation of the linear dielectric response, this calculation firmly establishes the validity of the ‘‘energy-loss’’ method previously developed by different authors. The formulation is valid for frequencies ranging from Ω=0 up to values at which the carrier mean-free path can again be considered small when compared to the wavelength of the applied field. This frequency range includes the free-carrier intraband optical absorption. Keywords
