Abstract
SUMMARY: A method is presented which allows calculation of a tectonic element in situations where the primary influence on deposition is eustacy. Calculation of the eustatic rise in sea level needed for deposition of any thickness of rocks yields a conclusion that, assuming deposition of the Carboniferous rocks in Britain was primarily influenced by eustacy, the sea level rose by about 227 m during the Dinantian and about 100 m during the Namurian. There was a temporary halt to sea level rises at a level corresponding with the Mississippian/Pennsylvanian non-sequence in North America. Preliminary attempts are made to estimate the amount of sea level lowering between transgression, and an example of derived figures for local tectonism in the late Viséan of Scotland is given. Keywords
