Abstract
The concept of ‘technopolis’ indudes but is wider than one ‘science park’, and embraces many different interpretations. The two oldest in France, Zone Industrielle pour l'innovation et la Recherche Scientifique et de Technique (ZIRST) de Meylan, Grenoble, and Sophia-Antipolis, are in a sense successful but have created a myth. The one has many small firms which would have been created anyway and the other has very few. This myth has led to the word technopolis assuming a character pervasive of many regional economic developmental po1icies. Typical is the Southern European High-Technology Road linking six technopolises in six departments in order to create an interactive network and co-ordinated development in the south of France. Keywords
