A Comparison of a Simple Corer and an Ekman Grab for Sampling Shallow-Water Benthos

Abstract
Estimates of the density of freshwater benthic invertebrates in shallow lentic habitats were found to be about 50% higher when samples were taken with a simple corer than when samples were taken with an Ekman grab. The use of the corer also decreased the volume of sediment collected and reduced the tediousness of examining large samples.
