Abstract
The problem addressed concerns the analysis of a specific genre of literature for the purposes of acquiring new knowledge about adult development and learning. Broad interpretations of the meaning of research are contrasted with interpretations of re searchers in education to suggest the empiricist bias of researchers in education. Literary research in terms of character analysis is described and it is suggested that analysis of literature possesses the potential to be an authentic modality of research. A need for further study in the area of developing research principles for the analysis of literature is indicated.
