Management of Musculoskeletal Problems of Hemophilia

Abstract
Musculoskeletal residuals of recurrent hemorrhage in hemophilia have been managed at Orthopaedic Hospital in Los Angeles since 1962. Over 550 hemophilic patients have registered for care since that time. The treatment approach includes prompt infusion of plasma concentrates following all bleeding episodes; longitudinal musculoskeletal evaluation; routine use of exercise to maintain limbs in optimal physical condition; encouragement of regular recreational activities; and use of dynamic, temporary assistive devices rather than traditional bracing.
