Abstract
Experimental results on the entropy of mixing of liquid transition metal based alloys FeSi, CoSi, and NiSi show that there is an exceptional negative entropy of mixing. In this work, we have shown that this effect is due to the filling of the d band of the transition metal as it is alloyed with Si. We propose a simple model which successfully accounts for the various features of the experimental results. Keywords
