Abstract
Elementary methods are used to provide a fundamental understanding of the salient features of jet noise. Simple reasoning yields information about the total noise power and spectral shape which are in encouraging agreement with experiment. The possibilities of remedying certain deficiencies are discussed, and the failure of existing methods is illustrated by reference to rocket noise. Keywords
