Abstract
A shallow crustal earthquake of magnitude ML 6.3 occurred on March 2, 1987, at 01:42:34 UT, close to the town of Edgecumbe, North Island, New Zealand. The focal depth was estimated to be 12±1 km. Surface deformation included multiple surface breaks. The main rupture was 7 km long and had a maximum of 2 m vertical displacement.Significant damage, estimated at over NZ$130 million (U.S$75 million), occurred to property in the surrounding region. Fortunately, few casualties and no deaths occurred as a direct result of the earthquake, partly because a magnitude ML) 5.2 foreshock occurred about 7 minutes before the main shock.
