Emission Spectra of O2(1Δg) Trapped in Solid Oxygen at 4.2°K

Abstract
Emission spectra of the 0–0 band of the Δg1 → Σg−3 system, and the 0–0 and 0–1 bands of the Δg + 1Δg1 → Σg−3 + Σg−3 system of oxygen were observed in pure solid oxygen while a stream of microwave-discharged oxygen was being condensed on a glass surface at liquid-helium temperature. Both the single and double transitions were characterized as induced electric dipole transitions. The lifetime of the O2(1Δg) has been estimated to be <10−6 sec in solid oxygen at liquid-helium temperature.
