Abstract
Thirteen spp. of fungi under Tympanis names have been reported as occurring on pine. It is considered that there are actually 3 spp. which can best be distinguished by the character of the primary asco-spores. T. hypopodia has fusiform, 2-celled primary ascospores and is also distinct by reason of the small size of the asci. T. pithya has ellipsoid to subglobose, 1- or 2-celled primary ascospores. T. confusa has elongate-fusiform, several-septate primary ascospores. The size of the asci overlaps greatly in the latter 2 spp. although the asci of T. confusa tend to be slightly smaller. T. confusa is the cause of the Tympanis canker of red pine. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
