Abstract
The biologic and imaging characteristics of 99mTc HMDP [hydroxymethylene diphosphonate] and 99mTc MDP [methylene diphosphonate] were compared in 10 patients. 99mTc HMDP blood levels were marginally lower at 4 h. There were no significant differences in 4-h urinary clearance, normal bone-to-background ratio or ratio of lesion to normal bone. Relative image quality comparison showed a slight preference for 99mTc HMDP. Biologically 99mTc HMDP compares favorably with 99mTc MDP. Under these conditions, 99mTc HMDP image quality is at least comparable to that of 99mTc MDP.
