Abstract
Research News: Ceramic materials for applications in electronics, solar‐energy conversion, optics, etc. can be synthesized using the sol–gel process. In the first part of a two‐part article the basic concepts of the process, its requirements, and potential, including ceramic precursors, reaction mechanisms and the historical development are described. Keywords
