Abstract
Small doses of hydrocortisone decrease the amount of hypothermia and increase survival time of adrenalectomized rats given a lethal amount of Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (endotoxin). Survival time of hypophysectomized rats given small doses of corticotropin was also increased. vVhen the log of the dose of hydrocortisone or corticotropin was plotted vs. the survival time of adrenalectomized or hypophysectomized rats given endotoxin, the lines were linear in ranges of 10 to 200 [mu]g of hydrocortisone or 0.5 to 4.5 milliunits of corticotropin. The indices of precision were approximately 0.3 and 1 for hydrocortisone and corticotropin, respectively. Keywords
