Abstract
Pair creation by an intense linearly polarized pulse in the vicinity of a nucleus is considered. It is shown to be negligibly small for all laser intensities for essentially all frequencies. Some novel theoretical effects are obtained from the relativistic generalization of the ponderomotive potential. Keywords
