Abstract
The behaviour of cis and trans isomers of dichloro and dibromoethylenes under electron impact has been studied from a double point of view: —the differences occurring in the abundances of the ions which are produced from each isomer; —the determination of ionization and appearance potentials. Ionization potentials have been measured by electron and photon impact. The differences between the observed values as obtained from the two methods have been interpreted in conjunction with the experimental equality of the heats of formation of the molecular ions originating from one or the other isomer. This interpretation allows to calculate the differences in the abundances of molecular ions.Simultaneously, an explanation for the differences in appearance potentials and in ion abundances of these ions, is given, based on the predissociation of the molecular ion to give C2H2X+.
