Abstract
By the use of a Sephadex column, human erythrocytes were successfully separated from 22NaCl which had been added to the medium. By this new method, the effects of irradiation on 22Na uptake into the erythrocytes at 0°c were examined. The uptake increased after γ-irradiation even if the dose were lower than 100 R. The increase was partially suppressed if the cells had been incubated at 37°c after irradiation. The energy metabolism in red cells, however, was not involved in this phenomenon, since the changes were not affected by substrates and inhibitors which brought about changes in the ATP content of the cells. The presence of Ca++ Mg++ in the suspending medium did not affect the uptake after irradiation, whereas EDTA increased and fluoride decreased it. The radioprotective effects of AET and of MEA were observed. Keywords
