Abstract
The procedures and underlying philosophy of the TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communications-Handicapped Children) program are described with emphasis on the role of parents as cotherapists. The concerns of older autistic persons and their families are reviewed, including residential, employment, and social adjustment needs. It is concluded that an individualized intervention program in which parents have primary responsibility for decisions made about their child and adolescent will provide the best, most responsive treatment approach. Keywords
