Thioacetamide Research in Dogs

Abstract
A dose of 25 mg/kg on alternate days will produce hepatic necrosis usually of the portal type, within 20 to 30 days. Six of the 9 animals receiving this dose died in the stage of necrosis. The other 3 survived 3 to 4 months and developed hypertrophic cirrhosis with portal hypertension and ascites. Three dogs received 500 mg of thioacetamide twice a week. One died on the 32nd day. The other 2 survived 5 and 6 months and developed atrophic cirrhosis of the Laennec type with abundant ascites. These animals have exhibited the phenomenon of Toxialepsy.
