The effect of oxidisation on the surface characteristic temperature of copper particles

Abstract
The effect of the oxidisation of fine copper particles with average sizes 100 and 160 AA on the characteristic temperature theta p was studied by the powder X-ray diffraction method, theta p was found to be scarcely affected by the oxidisation. On the basis of the Einstein oscillator model for the thermal vibration of a two-dimensional lattice consisting of oxide on the metal surface, it is shown that although the original frequency splits into two parts, corresponding to the acoustic and optic modes, such a separation has little influence on the surface characteristic temperature, in agreement with the experimental results. Observations of the oxidisation and coalescence of fine copper particles were also made.
