Abstract
Chicks were fed a basal fat-deficient diet or a corn oil-supplemented basal diet for 22 weeks. Analyses of the total lipid of the testes by gas-liquid chromatography were conducted at intervals from 3 to 22 weeks. The docosatetraenoic acid content of the testes of birds fed the corn oil-supplemented diet started to increase at week 8 and reached a maximum after week 15. Spermatids were observed on histological examination of testes taken from 15-week-old birds. The testes of the birds fed the basal fat-free diet showed a high docosatrienoic acid content at 22 weeks of age at which time spermatids were visible histologically. The possibility of associating the lipid change with spermatogenesis is discussed. Keywords
