Southern Groups and Clusters of Galaxies: II. UBV Photometry of Fifty-three Southern Galaxies

Abstract
UBV magnitudes have been obtained for fifty-three galaxies south of declination −35°, through from one to four diaphragm sizes. The objects are mostly in the four groups of galaxies in Dorado, Telescopium, Centaurus and Grus. ( U–B ), ( B–V ) diagrams have been constructed, and compared with those published by de Vaucouleurs and Hodge. The colours of many of the systems are discussed with reference to the spectra described in a previous paper (Paper I). Integrated magnitudes for standard diameters are derived using correction curves for different types of galaxies, which are constructed using the UBV observations reported here and also those of de Vaucouleurs. The distances of the groups of galaxies will be determined from these magnitudes in a following paper (Paper III).Keywords
