Blood Levels of some Inorganic and Organic Constituents in Normal Parturient Cows and Cows with Parturient Paresis

Abstract
The blood levels of the following constituents were detd. on 8 cows, contracting milk fever, just prior to treatment and on about the 5th, 10th, 15th and 30th days following treatment. The avg. values for the various blood constituents obtained before treatment indicate lower Ca, lower Na, higher K, higher Cl, much higher pyruvic acid, higher lactic acid, lower citric acid, and higher hematocrits than the levels found in samples taken 5 days or longer after treatment. The avg. values of the blood constituents obtained on the day of calving for normally calving cows indicated lower Ca, lower Na, higher K, higher Cl, slightly higher pyruvic acid, no change in lactic acid, slightly lower citric acid, and no difference in hematocrits from levels found in samples taken 5 days or longer following parturition. All individual cows did not respond in the manner indicated by the averages.
