Ordinary-Mode Electromagnetic Instability in High-β Plasmas

Abstract
An absolute instability associated with electromagnetic waves propagating perpendicular to an external magnetic field is discussed. A lower bound on the growth rate is found and it is shown that growth rates may be of the order of the electron cyclotron frequency.Keywords
