Abstract
The absorption spectra of mercuric halides in a series of aromatic solvents, as well as in several other organic solvents, were measured. It is shown that a relationship exists between the frequency of the spectral bands obtained and the ionization potentials of the corresponding aromatic solvents. This, combined with other correlations presented in the paper is strong evidence for the existence of charge transfer interactions between mercuric halides and aromatic hydrocarbons, indicating π complexes. Keywords
