Abstract
Reproducible values for the oxygen saturation of arterial blood during rest, exercise and breathing 100% O2 were obtained over a year''s time in one case of congenital intracardiac venous-arterial shunt. The magnitude of venous shunts reamined relatively constant during these varying conditions in each of 4 patients with congenital cardiac disease of cyanotic type. The decrease in oxygen saturation of arterial blood with exercise was related to a decrease in the oxygen content of the shunted venous blood in the patients studies.
