Clinical Studies of Sequential Dreams

Abstract
I. Introduction Studies of the sequence of several dreams within a single night have been rare, undoubtedly because, until recently, the availability of such sequences has been limited by the absence of a method to determine when dreams were actually occurring. Early investigators, by questioning subjects in the morning, concluded that dream frequency ranged from zero to two1,2per night. However, from later studies,3,4it was concluded as a result of random awakenings that multiple dreams do occur regularly. One thoroughly investigated individual sequence has been the three successive dreams of Descartes which were examined briefly by Freud5and more extensively by Lewin6and Wisdom.7For the most part, however, their discussions were concerned with the interpretation of individual dreams within the sequence, rather than with the relatedness of the successive dreams. More pertinent to the present investigation are other observations by Freud and those of Alexander. Freud believed that dreams occurring during the same night form
